THOUGHTS FOR THURSDAY

“Where you live should not determine whether you live, or whether you die.”

Homelessness Among Children Rises

As a result of the recession over the years a lot has changed in our world.  As if things did not cost much before hand, things continue to be as high or in some cases higher.  Jobs have been lost and as a result families have lost their homes.  Currently according to NYC.gov New York has 8,530 families with children in shelters.

Based upon recent research more than 1.6 million American children were homeless at some point in the year 2010, which is a 38% increase from the year 2007.  The study, which was done by the nonprofit organization National Center on Family Homelessness, projects their figures to be children from the age of 18 and under living with a parent or guardian living in the streets solely because of financial hardships.   According to the Youth Service Opportunities Center, each night over 38,000 individuals sleep in a NYC shelter.  This includes more than 16,000 children.

These children are faced with difficult times in all areas of life.  Due to their housing situations being very unstable they are forced to live in different areas and different housing.  Going from one shelter to another.  Sleeping i uncomfortable conditions where space is very limited and safety is an issue.  Never having one place to call their home.  These children are faced with hunger issues and poor health. These children's education is highly at stake.  At times these children have to switch schools often and some don't attend.

Thanks to a various amount of city funded and private agencies these less fortunate families are getting the assistance that they need.

                                                                PROJECT RENEWAL

A recent city study of health among the homeless revealed that homeless people are twice as likely to die as the general population and suffer a wide range of debilitating and chronic illnesses.  Project Renewals Medical Department provides integrated psychiatric and primary care for homeless men and woman regardless of their ability to pay and where it is easily accessible to them.
