"It is but equity....that they who feed, clothe, and lodge that whole body of the people, should have such a share of the produce of their own labor as to be themselves tolerably well fed, clothed and lodged."
Adam Smith
Income inequality is a huge issue that has been left un dealt with for some time. However lately it is a HOT topic being discussed and actually being taken seriously. It started with a group of people in Zucotti Park who's encampment formed "The Occupy Wall Street" movement. Now there is a NY bill that will rise out ever so low minimum wage rates, which are lower than 18 other states and the Ditsrict of Columbia, up t0 $8.50 an hour. OMG!!!
We remember when NY minimum wage was only $5 and some change and to think the current wage is $7.25 which took effect three years ago based off of a law. Before this increase The State Legislature last approved an increase eight years ago. The neighboring state of Vermont has a current minimum wage of $8.46, Massachusets is $8, and Conneticut is $8.25. Dont know what the cost of living is in any of the states however here in New York things are already high, cant imagine what it would be for those living off of minimum wage here. Most state and city entry level jobs are paying starting salaries of 30,000 plus a year. Some of these jobs have a minimum qualification of only a high school diploma. Can you imagine living off $15,000 a year!!!!
With the forth coming of good praises to have the raise of our minimum wages also comes the criticism. See people will be happy that their salary has to be raised however with the demand that employers pay more out comes the pink slips as well. See in this economy which is not holding up strong (yet) small business owners, a lot of them, cant afford to pay their emlployees more!! So this might not be a WIN for everyone.
