You Can Reach The Stars!!"
Making A Difference...
We all have those individuals in our life who can make a major impact on how you develop; whether for better or worse!! For most it can be a celebrity, anything from a baseball hero to a fashion designer can bring a shimmer of light to the young mind. However, there a few individuals who can bring inspiration and touch someones life. Adjusting a persons whole outlook on who they want to transform themselves into. A pinnacle of optimism. Bringing hope and realism to discouraged youth. These individuals aren't to be considered idols, they are mentors!! Mentoring is a task that many would be overwhelmed by. It is no easy feat to shape the minds of blossoming youth, especially with all the obstacles some face. Think of how many young men are on the street corners of your neighborhood. Many are just hanging out and others are hanging on for dear life in a need to survive. There are many parents trying to avoid their children becoming a everyday statistic.
We (1stClassLadies) can appreciate and applaud such hard and demanding work. Which is why we'd like to introduce to you Kalif G. Person. At just twenty four, years of age he is doing amazing things as the Junior director of the Boys Club New York in Harlem ( located at 321 East 111th Street). From creating a itinerary of vast activities, shaping leadership, coaching the BCNY Gerry Clubhouse track team, and giving the proper amount of tough love when needed. He with much help from his staff members continue, to create a safe haven for urban inner city boys.
1CL: So.. What made you interested in applying for the position of Junior Director at BCNY?
Kalif Person: I always worked at the boys club outta high school, i wanted to become a full time staff member..and once I got my degree I saw it as a chance to make a difference and be a influence. Especially because I connected with the middle age boys more.

1CL:What do you feel a mentor should be?
Kalif Person: A metnor should be someone who serves as a positive role model, making sure their mentee is always heading in the right direction. Having enough experience to guide them from their own personal lessons encountered in life.
1CL: Do you feel the work your doing is paying off? Can you see a difference in the boys your mentoring?
Kalif Person: Yes.. The ones who were disrespectful are forming into respectful young men, it's little changes in their character such as addressing people as sir or mame. The older ones are stepping up to show the younger boys a greater example. But it's always a on going process.

1CL: Do you feel their should be more Organizations/ programs like BCNY? Would it serve a greater purpose for the youth?
Kalif Person: There are a bunch of non profits, but there should be more for at risk children, the population of at risk children who are in broken homes don't really have a outlet. Due to high cost or high requirements.
1CL: Who is you mentor?
Kalif Person: Honestly, my coaches.. My former baseball coach Avi Ribenbach, as well as my track coach John Padula. They always steered me in the right direction.
